It began…

When the multiverse came to be, among the beings who were brought into existence were a pair of beings, or perhaps one being with two aspects: the Creator, and the Destroyer. The former, whom we will call Alpha, made new things to fill the universes over which it presided. It created the celestial bodies along with the gravity that governs the way they interact with one another. It laid out the rules of each of these new universes it was creating. At the same time, the destroyer aspect, known hereafter as Omega, established the limitations by which Alpha's creations can and will eventually be destroyed, sometimes accelerating the process manually.

"Omega, what would you do without my creations?" Alpha asked one millennium, hands idly creating a curling string of amino acids. "Without them, you would have nothing to destroy and sink into uselessness."

"Ah, but without the space my destruction creates, you would have neither the room nor the free raw materials with which to create your baubles." replied Alpha's antithesis, Omega.

"You think yourself more important than I am?" asked Alpha, randomly setting those protein strings down on a newly-formed planet. Omega watched for a span of time before flicking a bit of rock toward the planet.

"Of course. If I didn't keep knocking down your toys," Omega retorted with a coy smirk. "Would you ever find the will to make more?" The rock smashed apart the world where the protein strings had been set.

Alpha fumed. "This isn't an easy task! Always rebuilding what you knock down," It retorted as a new system began forming from the pieces of the shattered planet.

"And you think it a game to give you the space you need?" Omega sniped back as it stabbed at a star and sent the ball of flames collapsing in on itself with a mighty implosion. "Or the very guts of your stars, the raw materials made clean and ready for you to use?"

"You don't make anything." Alpha replied coldly.

"Don't I?" Omega quipped, eyes narrowing unhappily. "Watch me."

Selecting a neighboring universe that had never been properly consumed, Omega began to 'create'. There remained too many stars currently, six or seven solar systems left intact, as Omega had been too busy poking at Alpha's current pet project to be bothered with this one. It collapsed all but one of these, then unmade all but a handful of planets orbiting the only two remaining stars — a binary pair, leaving a vast emptiness around this solitary system. It waited, carefully plotting how to destroy the larger of the two stars that danced in unison in this system. With study, it seemed best to remove the glowing red giant so as to refuel its flickering smaller sibling. Timed just right, he could restart the littler star to return it to the bright yellow of its youth. The leftovers would condense down into the remaining planets still in orbit and helping to make them into potentially habitable worlds. Alpha just watched, amused at the inefficient method of non-creation. Omega was destroying in a way that exploited the rules Alpha had put in place.

"I doubt you could do better," Omega quipped when it noticed Alpha peering at this work. "Do you think you could destroy better than I am creating?"

"Challenge accepted," Alpha replied with a cold grin, pulling some of the raw material spread throughout the vastness left by Omega's reshaping of this universe. Using the rules of creation it was bound by, it reshaped these raw material into a system-swallowing gravity well. If Omega could flick a rock at its work…

So it went back and forth, the siblings squabbled like this, Omega destroying strategically to 'create' life, while Alpha set about creating gravitational pockets to pull debris together and send them hurtling at the lone fledgling star system. Alpha's aim left much to be desired, and yet, it did enough peripheral damage to the star system that Omega felt their 'contest' as it had been progressing would ultimately prove nothing. While contemplating the possibilities, Omega noticed that the universe that had started this competition had spawned sentient beings of all types from the original protein strings that Alpha had been toying with. Thus, he suggested that rather than compete directly, they select individuals from the local protein strings.

They toyed with this for a time, but both ultimately agreed that the beings on the lonely sets of rock were already caught up too tightly in the earlier lawless manner in which they had been working. Instead, it would be better to draw in un-tainted beings from the multiverse as after establishing a more clear set of rules. Once the new rules of the game were in place, they would pluck out these other beings to bring to this isolated and battered little star system in a dust-speckled void and their triumphs or failures would decide whether creation or destruction is superior at both aspects of reality.

"After all," Omega said, "How else will we know which of us is most important, if the field is not even and level between us?"

"Champions, then?" Alpha questioned.

"Champions. Each in our own way may pull forth an avatar, a champion, a hero. Let the mortal creatures born of neglected universes fight for us, only lightly influenced, until only one side is left standing. Whosoever has the last champion standing shall be held as Most Important by the other," Omega said, pointing out various individuals from which Alpha might choose. Alpha smiled, reaching for one he liked.

"So be it."
